Bio:
Jen Maze grew up on a cattle ranch in southeast Colorado, so she was born a Denver Broncos fan and a Rockies fan, but is also a Chicago Cubs fan by marriage. This summer she and her husband went to Chicago to fulfill his lifelong dream of seeing the Cubs play at Wrigley Field. It was also their first vacation without their two girls, ages 17 and 19, which gave them a sneak peek into the beauty of the empty nest!
Jennifer earned a bachelor’s degree in Chemistry from the University of Southern Colorado (now CSU Pueblo) and has been an educator since 1995. Sharing a love of science with students of all grade levels K-12, she has served in five schools and three districts over the last twenty-three years, teaching approximately 2700 students in total. She first implemented elements of Flipped Class in 2009 at Falcon High School, then a fully Flipped Classroom in the spring of 2010 and has been using the flipped-mastery model for Chemistry and flipped AP Chemistry ever since.
In addition to serving as a mentor in her own school district, Jen has also trained teachers in Video Creation, Flipped Class Implementation, and Grading/Assessment in the Flipped Classroom at both FlipCon12 in Chicago and FlipCon14 in Pittsburgh. Most recently Jen has presented on Assessment and Grading at the EdTech Summit 2018 in Colorado Springs. She contributes regularly to the local EdCamps, the Pikes Peak Area Leadership in Science group, #flipclasschat on Twitter and to Carolina Biological's Flipped Corner blog.
Within the past two years, she also began teaching German, exploring an entirely different approach to teaching and learning with Comprehensible Input (CI), Total Physical Response (TPR), and Total Physical Response with Storytelling (TPRS). As a part of the Banning Lewis Preparatory Academy’s inaugural year team, Jen is able to create even more personalized learning experiences for her students than ever before while helping to open a brand new school.
As the next step in her career, Jen is now pursuing a Masters in Teaching and Learning + Principal Licensure at CSU-Global. Her goal is to become an effective leader and school administrator so she can support students in meaningful ways as they learn and grow. This means helping the teachers to passionately invest in themselves and their students as well as helping the families to be actively involved in the student's success.
